People break into churches all the time. I was at youth group at church one night and we heard my car alarm go off, yeah people were trying to steal my car out of the church parking lot!

There was a time, not so long ago, when churches were open 24/7.
Sadly, there are many instances of severe vandalism against churches these days. Every year, there are hundreds of cases of vandals causing severe damage to both the interior and exterior of church buildings.
So, unfortunately, for security and safety reasons, and to protect the church from vandalism, the doors have to be locked at night.
It's unfortunate, but it's a sign of the times, sadly.

Churches started being locked about 20 years ago, due to vandalism. In the church I used to go to, some vandals tipped blue paint everywhere, the old lady that used to go in to do the flowers nearly had a heart attack. Sad reflection on the times. Don't know about petrol stations, maybe the same reason.

Churches used to be safe from intruders stealing from them. The Thieves have no moral right. So the Churches have no choice but to lock the doors. With all the Fires, the Robberies and every once in a while the murders, can you really blame them?

They shouldn't be locked in an ideal world, but maybe they have to because of vandalism. Still I think these days churches forget what they're there for. Once I saw a homeless man getting kicked off the church stairs in downtown Vancouver- by the priest!

I remember walking to a church and found written on the door, "This property protected by security such and such" I was rather sad and the though struck me if I went to heaven would there be a sign "This property protected by security such and such." Anyway told the minister about it, and they did install a doorbell in case anyone in need, could ring the doorbell which was connected with the minister's residence.

We had to put locks on ours so the extra-spiritual members of the congregation didn't show up too early. Sometimes all you want to do is pray and praise Jesus but you might neglect other aspects of your life that need attention if there isn't a limit set.

Sadly because people vandalize places that are unlocked, churches, stores, even gas stations. It is a sad state our world is in.

they lock churches because they have quite a few expensive objects in them, and there are far too many people who would think nothing of stealing and selling religious artifacts

Because criminals don't care what building they break into or what they steal. A lock on the door is one more obstacle between a thief and the stuff he steals.
