Send an e-mail to it. If it's bad, you should get a bounce message. If you don't get a bounce message it may be good.

The lack of a bounce message is no longer a relaible indicator of a mailbox still being live.

And even if it is still live, there's no way to tell if the recipient is actually using the mailbox any more.

you email it.

If it's inactive it will bounce back to you as undeliverable.
