they have satanic symbols in there shows, and seem to lean towards that type of stuff, yet in interviews, they seem to believe in god and going to church

i'm very much a heavy metal fan, but i think bands should just be themselves, on and off stage, like motley crue for example, they like to f*ck women, they ride motorcycles, their aggressive, they enjoy drinking, all of which go into there songs, and they REALLY enjoy

True Metal like Immortal, Hypocrisy, King Diamond, Kreator, and Slayer are real. Slipknot while they put on a great show are as fake as it gets. True Metal is against christianity and they live this life on and off stage. If slipknot sings anti-christian music and uses anti-god themes in their shows which they do, and then worship the very god they put down in their music , then my answer is Yes.

You could call them hypocritical, but they're just entertainers... it's part of the job, they play a role that appeals to a section of the market, or something that's interesting...
I mean, in his day Alice Cooper was the bogeyman of rock, but he was the calmest guy you'd ever want to meet offstage. I think he said in interview something like, you can only be the rock character on stage, it's for entertaining. If you try to live like that offstage, a, it's not the real you and, b, the lifestyle will kill you. I think it's wise advice, I mean it's true, the rock and roll lifestyle has claimed many a life, too many to list here anyway....
Sure, you've mentioned Motley Crue, they enjoy the lifestyle and survive and they're happy... so it's not fatal to everyone- but some people do survive it, I mean, look at Keith Richards, he's the classic example...it's a bit hit and miss though, not everyone can take the punishment. 'Knowing when to stop saves a lot of trouble.' and with that, I'm going to get some kip.

I just cannot be bothered to answer this.....it's a good question and the asker makes a good point.
It's just all the closed minded answerers that wind me up.
They stereotype metal when it's actually one of the most diverse forms of music around
They make these false, fleeting judgements on bands without taking the time to listen to their music.
I could go on a rant and scream and shout but I really can't be bothered any more. These people won't listen. The blinkers are stuck firmly on and they won't open their eyes to the diversity of music as a whole. It's the 'If I don't like it it's crap' attitude and it really pisses me off.
Slipknot are a great band. Yes, maybe they are a bit commercial and yes, maybe they do have a certain image that helps them sell records. But at the root of it all it's the music that drives them. Who cares if they use satanic symbols but believe in God. The most important thing is that they making music and people are enjoying it.
As Metallica said 'Nothing Else Matters'
Saying that I couldn't be bothered to answer this I've certainly rattled on a bit.

It's sort of like when Creed used to play up all the religious imagery to squeeze more money out of people. Slipknot does the same thing, they just exploit all things evil. Their lyrics may not really be meant the way you are interpreting them.
By the way...you can't serve two masters. If they are singing the praises of satan in their music and in interviews they are all about God, Church, get saved, etc...then that would equal hypocrisy. (I don't listen to Slipknot.)

I just look at it like this... any thing they do on stage is a SHOW... it is for entertainment... it is nothing different than Bruce Willis isn't a cop and Brad Pitt doesn't kill people... Slipknot just wants to put on a good show and I don't really care what their beliefs are out side that because they are a good band and you either like them or you don't... if something like this is swaying your opion maybe you were never a real fan.

Why do so many people think that just because bands choose heavy metal as their genre, and they used interesting symbols to catch peoples attention they MUST be Satanists?

And they stand for anarchy and violence, but they want paying for their noise, and you can't steal their stuff and they don't want you to hit them... This death metal crap, they are all just full of it.
I call them "S H I T - P O T"!
Ah, yes. Another album of a mentalist shouting "Diediediediediemuttha-funkkadiediedie" while the rest of them make industrial noise. So long as it gets the sticker on it
"Parental Advisory - Kids, this will pee-off your parents, or any sane adults, so don't let them hear it"
That's what the sticker should say.

As far as the band are concerned, haven't you worked out that it is all pretend, a ruse to make money?

It shows that their whole 'image' is fake... they know that by being satanic they will attract more people to their music so they just portray that image for money and recognition...
