First we were there until we got the WMD's.
Then we were there until we got Saddam.
Then we were there until they set up an interim govt.
Then we were there until they developed a constitution.
Then we were there until they elected a permanent govt.

Now we're there until Sunnis and Shiites stop hating each other?

That last one has only been going on for 1400 years now, how much longer could it take?

Maybe we just need to turn over Iraq to the Iraqis?

Sorry, one small error. Iraq, and Iraqis, Sunni and Shiite alike, were peaceful and prospering under Saddam. They had rebuilt a great deal since the Iran/Iraq war, and our first incursion, the so-called 'Persian Gulf War.' Under Saddam, much of the money coming into Iraq through the sale of oil was being poured into the construction of schools, hospitals, and other infrastructure. Say what you will of his methods of government; he killed far fewer Iraqis than we have.

Have destroyed that country, we do have an obligation to see it restored to a stable state, at the very least, before we leave.

I would agree with you wholeheartedly, if Iraqis across the board were to all say 'go away.' They may already be saying it, but I doubt we will hear that from our leaders, as long as they want to maintain a presence there.

ok first thank u for ur question and in my opinion the occupation of iraq is a big fault cause the war reason based on untrue reason,
second look what (shrek )wrote:-
[ What, and waste billions of dollars of investment?]
what about blood of innocent people ?? or did u think that iraqi people are not human ?? u r afraid about ur country investment but not afraid about the innocent people killed in the war .
- [ You Americans don't know how lucky you are to have an oil rich country under your control] .... the important thing for u is oil only is that right ?? but if u lose ur brother in this war what can oil do for u ?? can oil bring ur brother to life ?? sorry about ur thinking
cause u r so selfish and unfeeling, btw im from iraq and im very happy now cause u tell us the real reason of this war

We should never have gone there in the first place. The purpose was to get GW reelected, but think it will be the end of his party and maybe the USA. We need to break our "addiction to oil" by learning to use water as a fuel, not "about 25 years from now." I saw the first US Army vehicle that used water and a battery as a fuel at the US Army Transportation School in 1965. It was a sure thing, but it mysteriously disappeared. Our government and the oil companies disappeared it.

What, and waste billions of dollars of investment?

You Americans don't know how lucky you are to have an oil rich country under your control. I really envy you. I wish my country's leaders had the guts to do what GWB did for you. He lost all credibility, but secured oil and continued income for you. when crude prices touch $100-150 barrel a few years later, you will still get Iraqi oil for pittance as payment for "relief, reconstruction efforts", especially since more developmental projects are going to be managed by American companies.

Why can't you guys shut up and enjoy the ride? Or isthat a partofthe game? That a select number of americans protest against the war and stuff, so its only theleadership that loses credibility, but Americans are seen as morally upright?

You shouldn't have been there from the beginning!
You didn't make anything good for the Iraqis by your presence there but only spreading chaos allover Iraq.

Get out of there and let the Iraqis solve their own problems by themselves...they didn't ask for your help from the beginning.

Absolutely. Time to get out. Let the Iraqis handle their own future.

It was never about abuse or weapons or there civil wars.
Who ever has the oil rules the world. They want to insure their oil supplies. Even if they have to kill every Iraq to do it.
Almost done.
