I'm not trying to be racial, I work at a hospital and the majority of kids I register have 2 or 3 last names. When they have kids what name are they supposed to give. Do they pick one or do they give them all the last names, I'm curious

two??? you found a hispanic with only TWO last names??? most of us have five or six, but i haven't seen anyone hyphenate their name. i'm guessing people who do this to their children is because the mother and father aren't married and want both names to be passed on.

Oh, That's because it was a way to abbreviate where the families of the old Spain Were from. Wikipedia says, "In most Spanish, Portuguese, and Catalan-speaking regions of the world, people have at least two surnames. One is inherited from the father, the other from the mother. Parents usually pass on to their children the name they inherited from their father. In most Spanish-speaking countries, the father's surname is written before the mother's surname" You can read more about these last names at Wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish-language_surname
In my case my entire legal name has two last names, the one from my dad first and then the word "de" followed by the one from my mom. But I only use my dad's last name really.

The child retains both the mother's maiden name AND the father's last name, hence the hyphenated name.

Not all hispanics have hyphenated names but they do have to names only. In Mexico, they consider that normal. I don't know how they get to choose their real name.

I think the child is given the father's family name and the mother's family name so that both families can continue. When you think of it the child is a product of two families.
