I'm in my second year at a community college. I am trying to decide on a course of study. I want to work with criminally insane people. I am interested in psychopaths serial killers all that fun stuff. No dead people. Anyone have any suggestions or career paths for me. I don't really want to be a psychologist.

You can start your career in Department of Corrections as a correctional officer which requires an high school diploma. Once you have gained the experience you can continue your education and earn a Bachelor's degree in Psychology or a Human Service field to become a caseworker in a prison. You will also have continue to earn a Master's degree to become a psychologist in a prison setting. Good Luck, this is no easy job.

You are looking to a career in the prison system?! What is up with that? You are not going to find anything that pays worth a flip if you do not become a psychologist. I can't believe you are thinking of putting yourself in a work environment like that. I know someone has to be interested in these people, but why not go for a profession like becomes a professor in a college that is teaching about the criminally insane. Or go for the FBI or CIA or military. You really need the psycologist tag though for that to pay off in helping people as well as money in your bank account.

Here's the scene:
Hi, I'm Susie. I heard there was a disgusting murder with icky body parts in a blender, and this is the 4th one like this one this block.
What do you mean, I have to come SEE the crime scene? Just tell me about it, only leave out the bloody parts.
Huh.. a dead body with his arm on the sink and his head in a bucket. No blood, how odd? Oh, you're just not TELLING me about the blood.
OK, I'm taking notes, well actually, I'm not, 'cause I only went to a community college. I took Compassionate English and Easy Math for Would-be Geniuses, oh, and the History of Newfoundland Volleyball, so I don't know how to take notes, or study for more than 13.5 minutes. In-between commercials, ya know. Did you know Newfoundland has really big dogs?
And you think this guy is criminally insane? We'll have to ask somebody, because I didn't take Abnormal Psych or Criminal Justice classes. They were on Mondays at 10:00 AM, like anyone
could get up for that early a class--gawd. And all they talk about is bloody stuff like dismantling bodies, and Type AB+, like I know what that is. Why would you put a body on a mantle in the first place?
Well, REALLY? I don't know why you called me, either. Get a life, you big dumb loser!
Honey! WAKE UP! Take Psychology and minor in Criminal Justice or Forensics--YOU KNOW-dead bodies. Or Criminal Justie and minor in Abnormal Psychology
Criminally insane people generally don't take people to dances or the mall to get their nails done--they generally, murder them, rape them, and mess with the pieces. That's why they call them criminally insane, instead of sweety-pants insane.
We need more dedicated forensic people out there. It is EXCITING work, but you need to get ready.
Don't worry about the blood. Over time, you get SOMEWHAT accustomed to it, and are surrounded by people who are--or have been--- right there with you emotionally.
It's your LIFE__Make it count for something--good luck!

What kind of work, exactly, do you want to do with psychopaths? Interviews, therapy? You're probably looking to be in the CJ system, most likely a prison.

Unfortunately, you're not likely to land a position doing the really "fun stuff" without at least a Master's in Psychology.

In the State of TX you can be a psychologist in the prison system without having a doctorate, or a psychological counselor/social worker, I think. You have to check into your state and professional associations and their requirements.
