The biggest choke I can think of is the 1951 Brooklyn Dodgers, who had a 13 game lead with six weeks to go until Bobby Thomson's home run won the pennant for the Giants.
In 1964, the Philies had a 6-game lead with only 10 games to go and the Cards won the pennant on the last day of the season.

2004 is definately a choke, but it has happened more often to the Red Sox than the Yankees. As we are all thinking about the '78 Boston Massacre (which I watched) and the 2006 Boston Massacre II, I agree with the 1986 choke, the 2003 choke and so on and so forth that has been magnified by the media this weekend.

Now, Red Sox fans probably are saying this was a fluke and they are only 6.5 games (which is actually 7 games because the half has to be made up because you can't win a half game behind) and they've got 39 to go. Well, if there is a Yankees Massacre in September and the division ends up tied again...the Yankees have won the season series. 10-5 with 4 to go. That means NY would be declared the winner.

Maybe I can narrow this down to...the 2005 Red Sox (swept out of the playoffs) and the collapsing 2006 team (well behind the wildcard with 2 tough teams leading that) that might not make the playoffs at all. I didn't answer with anything other than Yank's/Sox because the question is geared to that...no matter the other wording.

There are some good examples on here. But when I think of choke, I think of the chicago cubs. The cubs are good at only one thing, choking and blowing a big game. If you want an example of choking, I can give you thousands of examples in the past 98 years, and they have one thing in common, the cubs. They are so pathetic that they set the choke standard for all other crappy teams that follow. The yankees, bills, and colts may have blown a few meaningful games, but the cubs have made choking their highest priority.

So many Sox fans quick to talk about 2004. I got somethin for ya:
Game 6 1986 World Series. Red Sox have a 5-3 lead with 2 outs in the bottom of the 10th. As usual, they blow it, finished off by Bill Buckner letting the ball go through. What about that one huh.

But the worst one has to be Jean Van de Velde in golf. He only had to get a double-bogey on 18 to win the British Open. He then hits the worst shots ever and TRIPLE-BOGEYS the hole. He then loses in the playoff

Bit reminiscent of Phil Mickelson, huh

Well i'm not in disagreement of the Yankees in the ALCS but today Boston completely blew it losing 5 straight games to the Bombers, and todays loss was with some of the veteran sitting on the bench for a day of rest.

the guy from Denver fumbling on the goal line and redskins winning.

Webber choked big too with his time out.
however, you cant blame the loss on the time out. there were more then his turnovers throughout the game. if that was the only mistake in the game, then yes. but if it would have been, then michigan would have won by about 40.
they took away all those wins anyways. for the players being paid like Webber...

I'm born and bred a yankee fan. I bleed pinstripes.

I'm smiling today...

but I still haven't seen a bigger choke than the Yankees in the 2004 ALCS. You know it and I know it. There may never be another collapse to equal that.
