The company was purchased by Raytheon, I believe. It was the hybrid division.

I need to know who owns the retirement plan now, so I can contact them for collecting the pension.

On searching, apparently the Jacobson v. Hughes Aircraft Co. lawsuit regarding Hughes stopping payments into the pension plan after being bought out by General Motors Corporation in 1987, is often cited in case law. Even went to the US Supreme Court regarding the pension fund surpluses (why Hughes stopped paying in).

But there was another sale from Hughes Aircraft Co. to Alliant Techsystems, Inc. in 1996/1997, and the transferred employees also had their pensions transferred.

But based on the timeline found in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hughes_Aircraft , it appears that the remains of Hughes Aircraft was incorporated into Raytheon in 1997. But I don't know if the Hughes Aircraft pension plan had a different name, as I don't see that division listed on the list of Raytheon-controlled plans here: http://www.raytheonretirees.org/goals.htm

And yes, apparently Hughes has had some issues about not properly separating out pension plans as they've been selling out to other companies:

So, you'll have to do some legwork... you may want to try some of the retirement/pension plan search tools at:

http://www.pueblo.gsa.gov/cic_text/money/lost-pension/lost-pen.htm
Best to try and find any old pension plan statements from when the person was working there, to try and find some account numbers to start. If possible, try and find some old co-workers that may know where to contact, or a union rep if exists.

There is this harrowing tale of a former Hughes Aircraft pilot about his pension ordeal from the Wall St. Journal: "When Pensions Change Hands, Retirees Can Be Lost in Shuffle - Mergers Shift the Obligation
To Pay, Leaving Oldsters Baffled if Problems Arise - 'Please Repay All You Received'"
By ELLEN E. SCHULTZ, Staff Reporter. In the article, Mr. Ackerman's pension was acquired by Ratheon, who contracts out to Hewitt Associates, LLC to administer it.

Best of luck, and hopefully you don't go through what Mr. Ackerman did!
