It is most likely because you ARE only 16 - your body needs time to adjust and balance itself...and your cycle will continue to change throughout your lifetime. You SHOULD tell your mother - there's absolutely nothing to be afraid of. She will probably make an appointment with a doctor for you - request a female. They're more understanding (because a lot of them have "been there" too). You may just need some chemical assistance (the Pill) to get you regulated.
And before you freak - you can take the Pill and remain a virgin...it does NOT mean you want or are planning on having sex any time soon. It will help to lighten the flow, ease the cramps & moodiness and regulate you to a cycle of every 28 days without fail (I can time my periods to the HOUR).

It could be something serious that only a Dr. can help you with. Im sure it's just your body still adjusting to puberty but when it gets serious enough for even you to be concerned, then it's time to see the Dr. I hate them to but we all have to go sometimes.

Definately talk to your mom. Sounds to me like you may have some type of endometriosis and you need to be seen by a gynocologist. The exam is not that bad, and you will have peace of mind knowing that eveything is ok.
