He'd be pretty dumb to say that since no-one knew about B.C and A.D until they were called that three hundred years after the birth of Christ.

It's as bad as a film I once saw (Hollywood again) where a servant rushed into the king's room and shouted 'Sire. The Thirty Years War has just started!"

He could be telling the truth, depending on how you interpret it. Being marked 40 BC could mean that it was marked with a regnal year that translates as 40 bc. If it were a coin of a certain king, many of them had the regnal year, or number of years the king has reigned, on the coin. Archeologists know when kings reigned, and can translate that to the current dating we use. So if the coin said year 8, that might translate to 40 bc to us.

No money would ever be dated "B.C." obviously - not except they were minted at a later date, and a time-visitor went back and placed them in an formerly era LOL actual the entire BC/ad element of reckoning the years did not come into fashion till really plenty later, like the middle a lengthy time period (ad = Latin = Anno Domini = "contained in the year of our Lord")

When coins were minted in what *we* consider BC, people were using a different system of keeping the calendar, so they would not have put a BC date on the coin, of course.

He may have found such a coin, but if he did, it's a fraud. At the time the coin was supposedly minted, they couldn't have know they were BC.
