Sadly not that long, also it may be more in females but alot of them I heard get tumors.... Um about 1-2 years, I also read that every 10 days they turn a year older in rat years that is... But go for it ^_^ just make sure you have a vet that is specialized in small animals, near by just incase. Good luck!

Mine lived for almost 4 yrs. He was very tame, and while I had him, I had no mice in my house at all. I plan to get another rat soon.
