It's a topic on Oprah right now, I want to know what you all think. I'll post my opinion after I get a few answers.

I agree with all of you. I believe that the teacher is the one who should have the conscience to say no, even if the student is the one more actively pursuing the relationship. To the user that called me an idiot, I wasn't trying to verify that the student was at fault, I was just asking people's opinions. Thankfully, the rest of you realized that. Also, Oprah isn't trying to shift the blame on her show, she's just interviewing people on both sides of the situation. She appears to be siding with the student victims.

Yes. The teacher is an adult, the student is not. A teacher is there as a role model and is there to educate, not to take advantage of a student. Lord help the teacher that tries that with one of my kids. For those of you who think only the men are held responsible, watch the news just once. Any adult teacher regardless of gender is responsible if he or she is having a sexual relationship with a student.

I was just listening to oprah too. I think the age thing is the problem I have. Teachers are suppose to be role models. I think this is an irresponsible act on the teachers part. I also think that students need to report the incident to their family and school authorities. I feel that if a student is old enough to have sex, they are old enough to say no to begin with. I believe this makes them partially at fault as well.

I like the how old are they question? Children should never have sex. Teachers with adult students is another issue. While there is nothing in and of itself of an adult dating an adult or marrying, the question of bias comes up. Can the teacher continue to do his job. Can the student in such a relationship be a good student. In almost all cases, though there are exceptions, the relationship will be undermined in much the same way that a spouse should not be a boss of his spouse at work. The home will be upset eventually.
People have to learn to take, accept, responsibility for their own actions.

If we're talking about a high school student or below, then yes... I would definitely hold the teacher responsible; not to mention they're more than likely committing a crime since most school aged children are well below 17. They took advantage of the child.
If you're talking about a college professor and a student, then more than likely not. It would definitely depend on the situation but I've known a few students who slept with teachers hoping for better grades.

If you are talking about a teacher who is teaching underage students, then yes. The teacher is the adult and is supposed to have the better judgement that dating a minor is a crime and isn't right. I'm not saying that the student isn't completely free and clear because it takes 2 to tango, but the teacher is the adult and should be the one making it clear to the student that nothing sexual can happen or ever will happen.

Absolutely! A student is not in the osition to abuse authority. The teacher was granted trust by the parents and by the state. In this situation, the teacher has abused that position, and the authority that comes with it. A teacher also has more emotional intelligence and experience than a student does. It is a violation of everyone.

Without a doubt! A teacher is to be a role model. Even if they were not a teacher; an adult has no business messing around with a minor. I can understand why a student would go along with it; but never an adult.

Yes I do..They are the adult, and should use their head..Althought these kids may look or act older, they are still kids. Even if that student pursues the teacher, which I know happens sometimes..The teacher needs to speak to the principal and parents immediately to stop this behavior..Oprah's on here in 15 minutes, I ll make sure to watch it..

personally yes because that teacher has the option wither to have a relationship with a student or not just as a the student does and if she or he chooses to then they should be prosecuted depending on the ages if it's a college student the student needs to change schools before a relationship happens otherwise it will probably not be allowed by the school

What's funny about it is when it's a chick, everything's kinda cool. The guy's say, "Damn, I wish that woud have happened to me in school" and they usually get a light sentence if any. When it's a guy, they throw the book at him. Kind of double standards, don't you think? Almost lost track of the question, but yeah, the teacher is in the fault, even if the student makes the first move.
