Say the batter hits a routine fly ball to center and the centerfielder drops it, then bobbles it. The runner decides to take advantage and go for second but the centerfielder finally manages to pick up the ball and throws him out at second. Could the centerfielder be charged with an error and how would the play be scored?

There can be an error on a play and the batter still gets out. In the play you described, the batter will not receive credit for a hit (instead he will have reached on an error), however he will be marked out 8-4, with an E-8 on the play for the dropped fly ball in center.

So yes, it is possible for errors and outs to take place on the same play.

That would be an error on the centerfielder for allowing the batter to reach 1st base. The play would be scored E8, then 8 with an assist to whichever infielder is covering. It works the other way around too, if a batter hits a clean single, then gets caught trying to get to second base he still is crediting with a hit for reaching 1st.

Yes, he is charged with an error. As long as the batter makes first it’s an error. It would be scored EF8 8-4po (I think it’s been a long time since I’ve done a score sheet) the EF would be fielding error (and ET is throwing error) 8-4po center fielder throws to second baseman for the Put Out
