I almost always use headphones so I don't know if this has been happening since I've had it (about a month) but the balance on the little audio adjustment thing is in the middle, yet sound only comes out the right side. when I move the balance left, no sound comes out, but all the way right produces no change...could someone help me out here?

ok
0) it's a toshiba
1) it seems many people think my headphones were broken, --that is not the case, I get sound out of both ear pieces.
2) I don't turn up the volume all the way with headphones in, that's WAY too loud.
3) I checked the balances and they're all centered.
4) It was nowhere near any liquid
5) it's set to laptop stereo (I checked)

Ok, now I went to control panel, sound, speaker volume, and set that to default (which is about 75%) and I tried the same song that I had on last night and it's working fine now @_@... ...I also put it back on "100%" and it was still fine (I had it up to 100% already because they're not that loud, even with going on iTunes and making all the files +100% volume)

Try to use another headphone, to be sure that the problem is in computer and not headphones.
Go to volume control and see the balance ( upper horizontal controller), it might be all the way to the right. Also, u might need to options and properties ( check all options), and find if any controller is all the way to the right.
Thank you.

take it to where you bought the laptop at and see if they will fix it for free or give you another one. One of your speaker can be broke if you listen to head phones all the time and turn the head phones all the way up on your laptop theres a chance you could of broke your speaker.

Mine did the same thing. And then evetually it would stop working in the other side. I had an acer, btw. What is yours? I can't help, sorry. If you have Acer, then you will have to send it to Texas with fedex to repair it.
