I work and volunteer with people with learning disabilities and am often amazed by how truly happy they can be, how much unadulterated joy they can find in music or dancing or laughing. And then I look at those of us who aren't 'disabled' and I see us worrying and stressing about so much.
And some days, yes, I envy them.
But my friends with learning disabilities are fantastically creative, spontaneous and certainly imaginative, so that doesn't exactly answer your question.
For me personally, to lose my intelligence is devastating (I had severe cognitive problems as side effects of prescription medicines) because I perceive it as a loss and understand the magnitude of it. But if I didn't see it as a loss, if I didn't compare myself to other people and find myself lacking, then maybe I could finally be truly happy.
Garrison Keilor put it well: "Intelligence is like four-wheel drive. It enables you to get stuck in more remote locations."

Well as a relatively bright person who finds it hard to be happy, I tend to think that I would prefer the simple mind who is happy. Afterall, being happy is what living is all about.
Your research question is appealing. I would think that many would lean the other way. But after leading the challenging and tortured life, I still think I would rather be happy.

I would rather be Happy and slow witted. I have to say that part of that is true for me anyway. My wit is not very good but I am very happy and I have a huge imagination and I am very creative. The true happiness has only come for me in the past 5 years and that was making myself happy. I had to learn how to do that. Thank you for the early morning brain exercise this morning.

Happiness and unhappiness are temporary states. Intelligence, wit, and creativity are more stable characteristics. I'd rather be bright and creative so I might find ways to amuse myself and find greater meaning in life.

well, refereing to Socrates' theory on sociology where he asked the reader to imagine being a person held captive, chained, in a dark cave, only slightly lit when shadows passed by from puppets on the hands of men BEHIND them, and then coming into the real world with lightt, where darkness represents the state where sumone duzn't know better, and then going up to the surface represents sumone being enlightened, when a person first comes up from the darkness, they wanna go back cuz they're not used to it, and then while they get used to it and understand, they feel sorry for the others down there, so its a question of whether or not u'd be happy living life blissfully unaware of the goingons around you, or whether u want to be that person on the surface looking down and frowning and feeling bad for the ppl who have no idea wat they're missing.

Unahppy yet bright and creative. I identify with these traits myself, and I think unusually smart and creative individuals are often tortured by surroundings in which they never quite "fit in."
