in safe mode and my mouse could not be found. I'm wondering if this is a virus? Or did my cat unplug my mouse? He's always getting into wires behind my computer.

yes that very well could be your problem, make sure your mouse cable is plugged in, and if your computer doesnt detect your mouse its probably shot

Just look behind there,and check if your mouse is unplugged.Follow the wire from the Mouse to the CPU cabinet.It will be easy to replace.Just look at the colours of the slots back there,compare with colour of mouse plug,and insert firmly but not forcefully.
If mouse came with installation CD,try repeating installation of Mouse.
OR Maybe the cat ate the MOUSE......

Why did you defrag in safe mode? It is'nt usually neccessary.
