The Red Light District is safe. Tour groups with old people walk through day and night. There are drugged out people who huddle together to smoke crystals of something out in the open. They're generally not a problem if you ignore them. Don't stop for them or buy anything from them.
The area isn't that big. You can walk all the streets and alleys in less than half an hour and check out the variety. The alleys can get seriously crowded. There's all kinds of girls. Barely legals to grandmas of all races. The girls are clean looking and can be attractive. They seem friendly enough. They're working. They need to pay for their space, and you're doing it with a stranger for cheap. Remeber that.
I've heard it costs upwards of $35 or 30ish euros for basic sex. I've seen the prostitutes negotiate with men at the door. Some of the women are not women. To the trained eye it is obvious, but if you're high from smoking canabis in a coffeeshop or have been drinking you might not make a good decision.
Visiting Amsterdam and the Red Light District alone is safe, but it probably won't be much fun unless you're very outgoing. Most everyone can speak better English than they'll admit, but day to day business is done in Dutch. It's good to buy a phrasebook. The Dutch like to see people try to speak their language.

Of course it is safe to go alone. Just don't dangle your rolex in front of everyone.
In warm september evenings the streets are so crowded in the red light district you don't have to be afraid anything worse will happen than being pickpocketed - but hey, that can happen in any crowd. Just watch your wallet and passport.
But no one is sticking a knife or gun at you, it's too crowded for that.
By the way, because prostitution is legal here in the Netherlands, it really is a friendly neighbourhood - after all, you get more customers if you make it a "normal" place to go for a drink and a good night out.
Anyway, it's fun if you're in a bar and some hooker having a break comes in sitting next to you - not to seduce you, just to have a friendly talk. They really like it if you show some interest (instead of disgust).

40 euros a go, so to speak. This is 20 mins including negotiation and redressing after. I wandered around this area and heard lots of complaints that the service wasn't up to much. Lots of dissappointed customers. it is a very clinical, no emotion transaction.
Three tips, some of the girls - aren't (if you get my drift), but mostly are in one street or area, some are more obvious than others.
Do watch out for pick pockets etc. even the girls themselves.
don't pick up a girl from the streets, even if they are cheaper. There are lots of hard drug users and, I assume HIV.
Basically, be responsible and enjoy - if that is what you choose to do. Shop around (mostly all the same price though - although more mature ladies can be cheaper if their looks have gone - or last thing at night if custom has been slow.) and don't be afraid to chat with the girls. But be nice - they are just working girls, homest about what they do, and deserve to be treated with a little respect.

When you come out of the train station, walk to the first major cross street. The Red Light district is to your left, across the canal. You can stroll through the area and see the women sitting in their store fronts... it's like a buffet... just pick out what you want and pay for it... it's strictly business... once you see how the place is laid out, you'll get the idea very quickly.
Just don't carry much money and, if you have wallet, leave it in the hotel safe... pickpockets are VERY GOOD in Amsterdam and there are a lot of them.

Best tip: Don't go!! It isn't safe down there, my boyfriend had a knife under his chin by just walking around.
Second reason: A lot of girls are illegal and forced into prostitution, they get beat up if they don't make enough. Of course there are girls who choose to do this for living, but can you tell the difference???

Most big cities can get dangerous depending on the place and time. RLD is safe in the day time and even until around 1am is alright. After that, be careful. There are many junkies and sellers on the streets. You need to watch out for junkies, pure psycho, and eastern europeans who are there after money.
i met an american guy who got attacked on the streets around 5am. he had to give up $600 to the robbers.

The Dutch are so corrupt, Americans should be able to feel comfortable there. If you're an American who isn't - you'll be counting the time til you use your return ticket.
