Halloween is a big deal in my household. When I am in a place with a yard we go all out with the decorating and everything (there are pics from the yard last year in my Yahoo Albums)

People in the South are now going back to "Harvest Festivals" instead of Halloween but lets think about this for a moment.

Stereotypically, Halloween was considered the day when the 'veil' between this world and the spirit world was the thinnest allowing the spirits through. Dressing in costumes came about as a way to fool the spirits and giving out treats insured that if it was a real spirit and not someone in a costume at your door, it wouldn't do any 'tricks' to you or your family.

Its just a fun holiday now and I wish it was more like my childhood when entire neighborhoods would go all out and the kids would have a great time.

Before anyone brings up poisoned candy, there is a book out called 'Nation Of Fear' or 'Culture Of Fear' (can't rememeber which one) and the gentleman that wrote it, researched the candy thing... there have been either two or three children poisoned by Halloween candy and in all of the cases, it was done by a family memeber and not a stranger.

I think it is in a falling out state because fewer and fewer people are as connected to their neighbors and neighborhoods so therefore, they don't want their children knocking on totally strange doors. I can say last year between our two jobs and knowing half of the people in the area, we had a record number of Trick or Treaters at our house and we had a blast!!

And to combat the religious factor... what does a fat man in a red suit or colored eggs have to do with Christianity anyway? But we still incorporate those ideas into other holidays.

People still love to celebrate Halloween because who wouldn't want free candy, gifts, and even money. Who wouldn't want to dress up for it either. The word Halloween means the evening before "All Hallows Day" which was a day of pagan festivities in Europe and in Ireland it was the Celtic Samhain or Harvest Festival. But then the Christians incorporated it into their own religion. In Britain and Ireland All Hallows Day was the day of the dead and so they used to put food outside to feed the returning dead spirits and people wore masks to scare off evil spirits. That's where the tradition of Halloween comes from.

I really enjoy competing in a Halloween costume event each year. I spend much time on my costume and try to fool my friends who are there. I have been fortunate enough to win a few awards. My best costume was of an old man. It took two head masks to achieve the full concept. I don't worry myself about Pagen or reiligious beliefs of Halloween, I just enjoy the fun.

I enjoy a small private ritual celebration of Samhain. It is nice.

"Samhain (IPA: [ˈsawənʲ]) is the word for November in the Irish Gaelic language. The Scottish Gaelic spelling is Samhuinn. The same word was used for a month in the Celtic calendar, and in particular the first three nights of this month, the festival marking the ending of the summer season. Elements of the festival may continue in the traditions of All Souls Day and Halloween. The name is also used for one of the sabbat feasts in the Neopagan wheel of the year."

Halloween is my favorite holiday.

I try to make everyday a little halloweenish. My house looks like the bordello of blood, I do set design, construction, costuming and make-up for horror films and haunted houses too. Even when I was Christian I loved halloween.

I love Halloween! I'm a Christian but try to teach my kids more about Christ on this day! I read about a 'Fear Not" Halloween party for Christians to reach out to the community. At our local schools, they have some Harvest crap name but the kids still get to dress up in costumes and have a party. (They don't allow them to celebrate Christmas or Easter in school, those are just regular school days before break...)

There's a good book I read on celebrating Halloween as a Christian but I don't remember the name of it, if any of you Christians want to search it online. It give several viewpoints on the origins of Halloween and where "we" fit in.

For Halloween , I make all my kids costumes - we win prizes! Our town has a big Halloween parade and everyone goes around to Trick-or-Treat. It's safe and fun. I dress up, too and my husband has to yell to me, "Honey, wait for the kids!" as I run from door to door!

It's the best! We balance out our faith with the "secular" holidays. We read "The Night Before Christmas", watch Lampoon's Christamas Vacation and Christmas Story (with Ralphie in it) then Santa comes on Dec 25th. But we also exchange special gifts with eachother and read from the Bible on Epiphany in January to celebrate when the three wise men brought gifts to Jesus. Why does it have to be either or?

Can't wait for it to get here now! All of it!

Halloween can be a lot of fun but the best part for me is having the little ones all dressed up and excited come to my door.

I love it! I love to dress up, and I love giving out treats both in my neighborhood in Queens and at the Greenwich Village Halloween Parade. Also, I'm a Christian, and love giving out tracts which usually relate to my costume. Viva Halloween!

I do!!!! I love it. I'm Christian and some seem to associate it w/ the devil or other negative religious figure. If people trace where Halloween came from they would know it has nothing to do w/ evil.
