The two most significant symptoms of depression are: 3
Sadness or hopelessness.
Loss of interest in or pleasure from most daily activities.
Other symptoms include:
Losing or gaining weight because of changes in appetite.
Sleeping too much or not enough.
Feeling restless and unable to sit still, or feeling that moving takes a great effort.
Feeling tired all the time.
Feeling unworthy or guilty without an obvious reason.
Having problems concentrating, remembering, or making decisions.
Thinking often about death or suicide.
If you have at least five of these symptoms for 2 weeks or longer, and one of the symptoms is either sadness or loss of interest, you are diagnosed with major depression. But, if you have fewer than five symptoms, you may still be depressed and need treatment.
If you have 2 to 4 symptoms for a period of at least 2 years (1 year for a child), you may have a long-term form of depression called dysthymic disorder (dysthymia).

There is no emotion, neither happiness or sadness , there's just nothing. You dont get joy out of the things you used to get joy from. You can't be jollied out of this black feeling. It's more than just the blues. You don't go out , be with your friends or even with your family. You sleep alot . You don't bother to take care of your own needs, food, wash hair , keep clean. You may have suicidal thoughts. You're like a rat caught in a maze. You might become obsessed with some detail but then again you might not. You have mega anxiety attacks about all kinds of things.
You have any of these signs get to a doctor or a mental health practioner. Being depressed is not the stigma it used to be . There are therapies and meds that can help.

not wanting to do anything or go anywhere
wanting to sleep all the time
abusing drugs/alcohol
not wanting to talk to anybody
loss of sleep and/or appetite
excessive crying
some people have all of these symptoms and some have just a few. If you think you are depressed or someone else you care about is suffering from depression, you need to get it treated. Especially if the symptoms last for more than two weeks. Good Luck!

If you are depressed and things in your life are not going well, that's normal. If you're depressed for no reason, that could be a chemical imbalance that could be corrected just by conciuously changing the way you think about your emotions and by changing your diet to include healthy foods and vitamin supplements. If you end up getting prescriptions drugs, you will be treating the symptoms and not the cause of the depression.

wanting to sleep all the time even though you have had plenty of sleep and shouldn't be tired. Not being interested in the things that you use to like to do. Those are two big ones i know there are more but that's all i can think of right off cause the sleep thing is what i see the most in people that i've known that are depressed.

Crying, laying in bed, loss of interest in the things you use to love doing. Weight gain or loss, negative thoughts all the time, feeling like your in a big dark tunnel and you cannot get out.
Hypothyroidism can be the cause so get your thyroid checked! It took 4 different Dr.s to properly diagnose me with thyroidism and it "wasnt" depression after being put on prozac!!!! Get it checked first!
