iPods play most music formats (mp3, wma, etc) and their own proprietary iTunes format. MP3 players cant play iTunes because Apple owns that format.
Now some of the new iPods play videos too but so do new a bunch of other products that are probably slightly better and cheaper in order to compete with Apple.
I personally think iPod's are overpriced because of their look and popularity. The are like "name brand" clothes, you're paying for the name. I own a sandisk mp3 player and love it.

i-pod is a mp3 player. i-pod is nothing but a brand name of mp3 player. (For example a mobile phone of Nokia). There is many companies who makes mp3 player. for instance, Apple, Sony, iriver, jetaudio and etc. And Apple made the mp3 player and named it "i-pod" which became a popular brand all over the world.
Still there is better mp3 players than i-pod these days but, i-pod has became just popular as same as like Nokia phones became popular in India.

Not much- the iPod plays mp4s and songs bought exclusively from the iTunes store, and a lot of MP3 players can't. I have a Sansa MP3, and not being able to play iTunes downloads doesn't bother me because I don't listen to mainstream music much; I listen to ambient, hardcore, garage band, stuff iTunes doesn't carry anyway. I buy my MP3s from EMusic.com

iPod is in basic terms a particular call for a partcular mp3 participant. Bit like the version between a thermos and a vacuum flask. inspite of the certainty that as in addition they play video now its technically a conveyable media participant.
