Magic!!!!!!!!! Science, i.e. controlled experimentation after rational inquiry, did not take hold in Europe until the 15th century. In China and Arab countries scientific inquiry probably began much earlier, as it did in India. However, there is reason to believe that some form of magic has been practiced by man since time immemorial. We explain the unexplained this way. Even today, we discuss aliens and astrology and religion in ways that could never withstand scientific scrutiny. Magical thinking is part of our DNA. Magic still reigns supreme!

They were one and the same for a long time. Some of our most impressive scientific advances came as a result of magical experiments gone "wrong." As recently as the 1800s, it was difficult to tell the difference between them. It was during that century that most of the scientific societies in the West came into being, and that started a quest by the 1900s to distinguish what was science and what was considered silliness. Since the understanding of science was unrefined until about 100 years ago, then, I will have to say magic came first (at least in the Western Hemisphere).
