A gift certificate to their favorite resturant will give them some time to themselves and it's a pleasant thing to do.

Another could be a gift certficate to wherever you decide, or a prepaid credit card that you can buy and can be refilled if need be.

Also, while he's away, phone calls will probably be all they'll get. A nice prepaid calling card for the husband would be appreciated I'm sure. Maybe make a small gift basket for the husband with a prepaid calling card, sweets, and personal items. Depending on where he's being deployed to, but best bet is to make it things that he can slip into a backpack. If he'll be out on the front line, make it small samples of items, like shampoo, wipes, ect. that can be easily stored in a small space.

For the wife, again...a gift basket with other items, maybe a movie or two, stationary for writing to her husband, stamps, sweets maybe, ect.

My niece just got married last month. Her and her groom-to-be was on the wedding registry in several stores. Which was very helpful for all of my family, at least we knew we wouldn't be getting them the same thing.
Even though they do not have their own place, they will need many items when they do. Some ideas are toasters, blenders, dishes, towel sets, glasses, pans, and anything to start the newlyweds new home. I got my niece a 20 something piece containers that were stain proof which cost about $20 or $25. She loved it because the ones she had in her apartment were all stained and she got rid of her old ones. Containers of any kind has always been a great gift for me to give others.

Why not have some pens engraved with their names and the date of their wedding since they will be doing a lot of writing back and forth? It is also something that they can keep for years to come.

You could give them webcams to keep in touch and be able to "see" each other while he's away. You could also give a nice cash gift.

since the groom is deployed, you better buy a toy to keep her busy

i think that if you made a scrapbook of them when they were together then she would miss him just a little less and be a little less worried when he was deployed

Gift card. It's safer that way.
