Try making sure firewalls are disabled, they can sometimes cause failure to see other network PC's. Also, you may want to make sure that you have shared the folder (or entire hard drive) by right clicking on the drive/folder and selecting SHARING.
Also, if you are running XP on both PC's, its sometimes a lot easier to make sure you have created a user account with the same exact name and password that you had on the primary PC, otherwise you may have to do a start / run and type in \\COMPUTERNAME and then hit ENTER and then be prompted for the username password (which you can input there also).

Make sure you have the correct folders being shared otherwise the laptop won't see them. Also, if the laptop is complaining it has no connectivity then check the IP address and get the desktop to connect directly to it. Alternatively try reseting the router.

Make sure file/print sharing is enabled.
If you want access to everything on the machine, right click the Hard Drive(s) in My Computer, select sharing and tell it to share on the network...allow users to change files if desired.

haha, xp does suck at networking. Make sure they connected to the network without any "limited connectivity" then on your desktop make sure your hard drives are shared. then on the laptop go to start/run and type "\\Desktop conputer name"
my computer is called artillarybox so i would do \\artillarybox
