AVI is a audio vedio interchange file. As its codecs are not supported by Media player u cant open it. AVI files are very mych compressed and has little file sizes when comapred to other file formats. Down load K-lite mega codec pack and instakll it. U get a classic media player in which you can play almost all the formats present in the world... the file size may be 25 to 38 MB... have a fun...

AVI files are video files. The video and audio in the file can be compressed in many different ways and media player needs to decompress it with the same CODEC as was used to compress it. Windows has a few CODECs built in but your AVI file needs a different one. You can find out which CODEC you need by using something like Media Info from http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/en or you can use a player like VLC from http://www.videolan.org which has many CODECs built in.

You might not have the appropriate CODEC. If the AVI isn't too big, you may open it in a regular text editor. The first characters of an AVI defines the video compressor.

AVI id a type of Video file. Media Player SHOULD play it fine , UNLESS it's been created with a "special dodec".
a "CODEC" means "Code & DeCODE" as in compression method used to compact a file. 2nd link is for free codecs at Microsoft
