Washington Irving, William Cullen Bryant, James Fenimore Cooper, and Edgar Allan Poe. Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Nathaniel Hawthorne and Walt Whitman are just a few of the American authors that might be studied in an American Literature class.
