How about 40 little token gifts to show you put some thought into it? Doesn't need to cost a fortune;could be postcards of a fav place, bar of chocolate, silly jokey things. Kind of like a birthday stocking?

Maybe surprise him with a Hot Air Balloon ride if there is one in your area. They also have Dinner Trains in some areas. Where I live you board a train that goes to a winery and have dinner on the way and free wine samples afterward. Whole trip is 1 1/2 hours. Or take him horseback riding? Just something that is not so "everyday" will make it memorable. Maybe a professional massage and dinner out.

Take him to dinner with a few friends if there are a group of you or on your own if not.The best time is that which is spent with family and friends.
Maybe buy him a bottle of a special whiskey or other drink he likes as a memento.
The old saying is true, its not the gift but the thought that counts.
Good luck,I hope he appreciates your efforts !

Making 40, is a milestone. This should be a very special time for him. Do something thats personal, not mushy, but personal. Something like, a gift you make with your hands, something that he can relish for years to come. Something that highlights his 40 years on Earth, to look back on, that kinda thing. Something that tells him, "Hey, this is your life". If that dont do it, cologne, a night out, even gift certificate somewhere. But id try the personal milestone thing first. Something YOU put together. Good Luck

What are his interest? How much are you willing to spend?
Me being of that age.....I would love some sport tickets.....or season pass to football.
Does he like a college football team? Get him tickets to their games or game (if exp is an issue).
Also, it's nice to have friends sharing the experience. Groups always mean more fun at a game.

I like that other person's idea of giving him 40 inexpensive gifts. That's clever. And what's up with all the viagra answers, 40 isn't even old, and I'm sure most 40 year old men have no problem getting it up.

Is this a friend or a FRIEND? It makes a difference. If he's a friend, tell him you want to take him out to dinner...and he should pick the place. Then call all his friends and invite them.
If he's a FRIEND, make a hotel reservation, have food and champagne delivered to your room, buy some sexy undies and party all night.
Have fun!

My wife had a surprise birthday party for me, invited friends including people I had not seen a year or more, and we had a great party in the back yard.

Take him out for a beverage at the local tavern with a group of your friends... should be fun and better than any object you'd give him. People that age have everything they need by then.
