they used to make quite a few hemi engines, so one being wholy better than the other is hard to compare. The top of the line hemis of yesteryear did actually produce more power than the current one IIRC, but you have to factor in that they didnt have emissions testing.
the new hemis are actually barely even hemis, and the hemipherical chamber isnt even all that efficient compared to the other shapes they use today, esp because they have to use only 2valves a cylender. The new hemis are just a marketing gimmick to get the people that used to love the hemis to buy their cars, regardless of the fact that any setup could produce that power at that size of engine.
oh yeah, and theyve yet to put that new hemi into a decent freaking car. They need to make a proper sportscar, not a 4800 pound magnum, not a 4 door charger, not a jeep.
The LS series engines from chevy are much better engines. Lighter, smaller, larger displacement, larger aftermarket.
to james: The viper engine could easily produce 200 more hp if they wanted it to. its a very conservative tune for that motor. and you cant add 4 valves/cylender to a hemi engine. the geometry doesnt work correctly. thats why theyre ohv.

Yes and no, power is about the same, but better fuel economy due to the EFI and computer control. You can debate the subject all day, and find the faults in ether engine.
What i would like to see is a 4 valve version with SOHC or DOHC. Ford did the DOHC years ago(late 60's), but it never came full swing due to the NASCAR regulations. This engine was the 427 cammer.
Why dont they put more of this technology into a viper engine? The 8.3L V10 only puts out 505 hp. Could you imagine the amount of power that could be created with that much displacement available. They should modify the current 6.1L V8 Hemi(425hp) with 2 more pistons and do a redesign of the heads to incorporate 4 valves and OHCs.

This engine is overall a better engine, at least for the street. It is lighter and more efficient. However, it does not have the strength that is required to make the kind of power that the old hemis could make with even minor modifications.

Yes and no. Let me explain
The Hemi of years past had verry little restrictions on it, it was fast, drank fuel like a fish and would go like crazy
Unlike todays Hemi that is computer controlled, and has all the fed ristractions on it.
The Hemi of today does get better gas milage, is now fuel injuctioned and not carbed,
So as you can see yes and no
Hope this answered your question and did not confuse you even more.

Not at all. They are a let down compared to the old motors.

I don't know for sure, but they should be with the introduction of direct injection and numerous electronics.
