BUY A DE-HUMIDIFIER. It really helps!!! Cured our mildewy smell AND from more mold and mildew from forming.

I would buy one of those kits to test and make sure it is not at toxic levels.

First, you have to locate the mildew! In older mobile homes, common sites for this would be under the carpet near a vent or window. Providing the home was never flooded... if it was, then the whole floor system may have mold/mildew.

A simple mixture of 50% bleach and 50% water will kill mold/mildew on most surfaces with just one application... I prefer to use a spray bottle myself, so as not to get too much water on the subfloor.

You will probalby have to replace the carpet pad, at the least, and perhaps the carpet, where there is mold under them.

Another source for mold/mildew is the subfloor hidden under tubs, kitchen and bath sinks, etc. If there has ever been a water line break, then there could be mold/mildew under the subfloor, in the space between the subfloor, and the insulating underbelly. This can be a LOT of work to remove mold/mildew from this area.

Good Luck!

Once you've eliminated the damage of mildew and mold infested areas in the mobile home, have a professional auto / mobile dealer or company ozone it with a portable ozone machine to permanently remove the musky odor. Contact "Service Masters" a Nationwide Company or your nearest full service Dry Cleaners who specialize in fire & water damage restoration who might be able to refer you to a good company who specializes in ozoning.
ABOUT OZONE & HOW IT WORKS:
Ozone (03) is a naturally occurring substance found in nature that we cannot live without. Ozone is an activated form of oxygen (02) with three atoms where regular oxygen has two. Ozone in the upper atmosphere filters out harmful rays from the sun without which all life on earth would cease to exist. Closer to home ozone is produced by lightning in thunderstorms and also by ultra-violet light from the sun. I¹m sure you have experienced the freshness in the air after a storm. Ozone is very unstable and has an average half life of 20 minutes, this is why ozone must be produced at the point of use and cannot be stored in a container for later use. Ozone will cast off its third atom onto any other organic element thereby oxidizing it or converting it to another substance. In the case of odors it will convert a foul-smelling substance into a non-odorous substance naturally with no unhealthy chemicals to buy, store or use. Once ozone has done its job it converts back to oxygen. Ozone will also deactivate and destroy molds, bacteria, virus, fungus, and mildew.

My aunt and uncle purchased a small manufactured home that had been damaged during the bad hurricane season that went through Florida a few years ago (before Katrina). Part of the front had been blown off and there was mold and mildew everywhere. My aunt used bleach water and cleaned EVERYTHING in the home with it. She opened all the windows, put on rubber gloves and a face mask (the kind you can buy in the paint department). She had to do this several times. Some of the drywall was ruined beyond cleaning and had to be replaced.

I use a non-toxic product called MoldZyme to remove the musty odor associated with mold and mildew. The best results can be obtained with a fogger for a larger area.

You might want to check out MoldZyme on their website - I've ordered from them and they seem to have their products carried at retail stores around the country.

You can check out their site, http://www.zymoco.com/Products/MoldZyme/tabid/189/Default.aspx for more information on the capabilities of the product.

First use a color-safe bleach and after try putting some charcoal briquettes in a plastic bag (leaving the top of the bag open) under the seat. After several days, I'd replace the briquettes with new ones if the odor wasn't gone. Charcoal absorbs ordors. This work for me. Good luck

You will need to find the source. I personally would rentan ozone machine for about $50.00 and use it on everything, including my cars. They had different scents. The auto dealerships also use this along with apts to try and rid of curry and other odors. You really need to find the root of the problem. May have a roten board or something like that.

We use a product in our camper called Damp Rid... You can buy it in the automotive dept. at Wal*Mart. It comes in a bucket and you just set it down and it absorbs all moisture in the area. Its inexpensive also, It's only about $10.

If the smell is real bad, it's probably in the walls. If so, to eliminate it, you'd probably need to take out that insulation and replace it with new. Trailers are notorius for this problem.
