With the redevelopment of the ECW brand in WWE during 2006, Tazz left the SmackDown! brand to join with fellow ECW members but not before challenging, and then defeating RAW announcer Jerry "The King" Lawler, who had been making insults about ECW in weeks previous, in a match at ECW One Night Stand 2006; choking Lawler out in only 38 seconds with help from a distraction from Joey Styles.
Tazz would go on to become the color commentator for the ECW brand alongside play-by-play announcer Joey Styles.
At ECW One Night Stand 2006 JBL made an appearance and insulted the crowd. He then insulted Tazz and announced that he would take Tazz's place as the new color commentator for SmackDown. He made his debut as a heelish commentator on the June 16th edition of Smackdown. As a color commentator on the show Smackdown! JBL is known to make racial slurs usually insulting Mexicans or other wrestlers of Latino descent, including the Spanish announce team at WWE Pay-Per-Views. However JBL only insults face wrestlers in this way as heel Latinos are often praised by JBL for being "legal citizens" of the United States as a wink at the crowd pertaining to illegal immigration issues. However, Sylvain Grenier is one heel JBL expresses hatred towards, due to his Ambassador-at-large for Quebec gimmick. It should also be noted that Layfield was very good friends with Latino wrestler Eddie Guerrero in real life, with Guerrero even attending his wedding as a groomsman, contradicting his on air antics toward Mexican wrestlers.

With ECW being reborn by the McMahons, they needed someone who was in the ECW family for a long time and it was none other than Raw's Joey Styles and Smackdown's Tazz as the obivous choice for the new ECW. JBL announce his announcing debut on ECW One Night Stand 2006, since he was force to "quit" after losing his U.S. Title to Lashley (in real life, JBL retired because of a bad back and was offered an announcing job by Vince, because he was so good at doing promos when he was wrestling and could fill in the void left by Tazz. Because JBL is doing a great job as a commentator and Tazz is doing a great job in the same job too but in ECW, ECW came back so Tazz came back to ECW, JBL is in WWE, so he quit the WWE and came back as a commentator, i know really complex story..
