Overdrive is just another gear in the car's transmission. It is used mainly for coasting because it has very little power to accelerate but also is most fuel efficient. On cars with automatic transmissions it will automatically engage unless you disable it.

The above are all correct. I'll just add 2 cents worth. Over drives are either electrically engaged or manually engaged. Often times, this is 5th gear in a manual transmission, in is an overdrive but not referred to as such.
It is possible to add an overdrive to an older car not so equipped, but not being a mechanic I can't tell you how it is done.

Overdrive is a higher gear on an automatic transmission. It saves fuel while decreasing performance (although you probably will not notice a performance decrease). Some vehicles have a switch to disable the function. Just leave it 'active' and you can ignore it.

Overdrive is a extra cruising gear on automatic gear boxes.
When you are on the freeway maintaining a constant speed the car shifts into over drive to lower the RPM and conserve gas. When you step on the gas it shifts back into regular gears.
There is usually a button near the shifter to switch it on and off.
