Teams of this era played in two principal ballparks, Washington Park and Eastern Park. They first earned the nickname “Trolley Dodgers,” later shortened to Dodgers, while at Eastern Park during the 1890s because of the difficulty fans (and players) had in reaching the ballpark due to the number of trolley lines in the area. The club also engaged in a series of mergers during this period, acquiring the New York Metropolitans in 1888 for territorial protection and star contracts, merging with the Brooklyn Wonders in 1891 as part of the Players League settlement, and merging with the Baltimore Orioles (NL) in 1900 as part of the National League's consolidation of clubs.

The name comes from the early days of the team when they played at Eastern Park in Brooklyn in the 1890's. The name was a reference to "trolley dodgers", the Brooklyn pedestrians who had to dodge the trollies on the criss-crossing streetcar lines in the area.

They used to be the Brooklyn Dodgers. It was short for the original name, the Brooklyn Trolley Dodgers. When there were trolleys running through Brooklyn, people on the street had to avoid them or get run over. As a result, they became known as trolley-dodgers. When baseball came to Brooklyn, they adopted the name for their team. It went to LA with them when they moved there.

I think it refers back to when the team was the Brooklyn Dodgers, and in Brooklyn people were always having to dodge the streetcars there or get run over. Hence the name. Pretty exciting stuff huh.

Dodgers need a complete renovation to compete in '11. From the McCourts > GM > Manager > Front line starting pitching > Relief pitchers > more productive bats. The entire season has been disappointing and unless major changes / additions are made, next season will be the same or worse - new manager or not.

A complete and utter collapse by every one involved. Ownership in doubt and severely constrained by financial problems relating to failed marriage and subsequent messy divorce proceedings. General Manager's inability to spend money on more payroll led to this reliance on trades to shore up team. Pierre was no great loss, so no problem there. Other trades for bits and pieces were OK but couldn't really improve team at all. Mannie's problems then made it mandatory to put replacement level players in his position. Of course, that didn't work at all. Torre's management this year and his handpicked successor's failure to solve the lack of hitting was a disgrace. Neither will return, so forget that. The offense went blooey, the bull pen went blooey and the team failed to score more runs than the pitchers, who, aside from Kershaw and Billingsley, were usually giving up runs by the dozens. As Charles Barkely once said. "Bad team man, Bad "f*****g" team man". As for next year, who knows? Big talk in the papers in LA about change of ownership. Stay tuned.
