Go to fishermans wharf in Monterey and see the Monterey Bay Aquarium. It is the best aquarium. If you have the time take PCH Hwy 1 all the way up. You could go to Hearst Castle. Stop at Robin's in Cambria for lunch. They have the best lobster bisque all made with fresh herbs from the garden out back. Go through Big Sur. It is one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world. Try 17 mile drive and Pebble Beach golfcourse. Great coastline views from there too. I am assuming you want to know what to see between LA and Frisco not in LA or Frisco. You pick up HWY 1off of 101, just south of San Luis Obispo. You will go through Pismo Beach, Morro Bay, Cambria and all sorts of other little quaint towns and villages. You could spend a week really exploring the coast or you could race up to Frisco and be caught up in the traffic and chaos. Whatever is your pleasure!

Do you mean on the way or once you're in SF?

Places to see if you have time on the way: Hearst Castle in San Simeon; Cambria; Pismo Beach area.

SF: Golden Gate Park w/the new DeYoung Museum; Pier 39 (ok, so it's a touristy area but it still has the sea lions who've taken over some docks and are hilarious to watch and listen to); downtown around Union Square; the Exploratorium (if you like science stuff); Coit Tower; cable car ride; Chinatown; Ocean Beach. Just walk around and people-watch.

Why not drive the other way east and see the Grand Canyon, you are only young once. Apart from that pacific coast highway is one of the best or the, best in the world. do not bother with L.A. or San Fran, just get into the route. I am English in England and did it in 1973 Love it, especially Laguna Beach. Enjoy.

I suggest that you definately drive the Big Sur Route but make sure it's during the day. It is so beautiful. Stop if you can and take it all in. I lived there for several years and I truely miss it, from the bottom of my heart. A good place to stop and eat is at Nepentha's and if you like the natural hot springs thing, Eslan is a great place too. Have a great drive. I wish I was taking that trip....but stuck in UTAH. Yuck!
