This depends primarily on the climate where you live. If the play area is in direct sunlight for much of the day, you may wish to consider another alternative, because this stuff can get scalding hot. One thing that many day care centers use is gravel; it has excellent cushioning for when children fall down, and the small rocks cool quickly. It's far less expensive than laying down artificial turf.

Also, check the drainage in the play area when it rains. Some type of padding is generally needed under artificial grass, and you don't want the underlining to stay soaking wet.

You should consider something more soft like the extruded rubber pellets or wood chips for a play area. The fake grass gives wicked carpet burns - ask any football player. Also Masticated Rubber matts are also good.
