There is a lot to do in Austin that would not cost a lot.
Here are some ideas... check out Lake Austin or Travis Lake, the Hike and Bike trails, bat watching (free!!!), go rent a canoe, Zilker Park, Mount Bonnell, Botanical Garden at Zilker Park, Sixth St., Alamo Drafthouse, and depending on what time of the year it is there is almost always a festival going on here in Austin that does not cost anything to just walk around and look at stuff. Along Congress Ave. there a lot of vintage shops to window shop at.
I have lived here in Austin for 23 yrs and my family and I never have trouble finding things to do that are either free or inexpensive.
You can go to austin360.com and check out what is going on for the weekend or during the week. I love this website because it is user friendly and always updated. Pick up a Chronicle on Thursdays and that also has a lot of info on what is happening around Austin.
Good luck and have fun!!!

Well, summer is almost over, but they have had some free movies in the park, so check those out (if they are still having them). Many bars/restaurants will have live music, and some do not charge a cover. I think the music will be better in September, to get everyone in the mood for the Austin City Limits music festival. Zilker park is free, and you have access to frisbee golf and the hike/bike trail. (you can also rent kayaks and canoes there, and it is pretty cheap) There are also lots of other parks that have hike/bike trails, with no admission fee. Have fun!!
