Here are some possibilites:
-- You have spyware/adware. That usually slows things down quite a bit because of extra processes running. Use Spybot - Search & Destory or Ad-Aware to remove spyware.
-- Your hard drive needs to be defragmented. Over time your hard drive will respon slower because of parts of files being stored on different sections of your drive. Defragging is a bit like cleaning up your office or desk area. An organized hard drive responds faster.
-- You're running lots of heavy-duty applications and you could use some more RAM (memory).

Have you tried a disk cleanup (start ->programs ->accessories -> system tools) or a defrag (start ->programs ->accessories -> system tools)? Also try to delete some stuff sometimes a full hard drive can slow a start up or shutdown. Also if it is really slow you may have a worm and should check for worms with your antivirus software.

Could be a virus or spyware. If you keep your PC tuned up regularly, and notice slower than usual activity, then that's probably what it is.

It can't just be one thing there are many things that can slow down a computer.
For example:
Spyware
not enough RAM
slow cpu
errors in the registry
too many processors running
You have to find the problem in order to solve it.

The most common cause is your memory bank is getting full. This also can be caused by heat, not enough cooling for computer. You can delete unwanted items or add more memory

It could also be that you need more RAM. Open Task Manager and go to the Performance tab and check out your available RAM. If it is below, say, 75000...you should get some more.

If you're on roadrunner, I had to call the cable co. They said a squirrel had chewed through the line last time mine ran really slow. They installed a new line.

Probably you storage a lot of programs, include pictures, games, videos music downloads so try ti check the space disk and delete unused information. Also, spam sites take a lot of space so check that area too.
i just my guess.
