What's the alternative? When a democracy is threatened by a dictatorship, just give up? Democracy's wouldn't stay around very long if a country or group of people knew they could conquer one just by DECLARING war.

Only if those lives are in danger. I do not believe it is justified to risk lives to spread democracy; such actions carry the stench of imperialism.

For those who choose to sacrifice their lives, yes.

That's the glory of a volunteer military. Men and women who choose to put their lives on the line to fight for what they believe in.

But one of the core principles of any democratic form of government must also be freedom. So, nobody should ever be compelled to put their life on the line if they do not choose to.

Depends. You are free to sacrifice your own however you should not be willing to sacrifice the lives of others.
