I don't know if you've read the ESPN article by Gene Wojciechowski, but he believes Tiger is the best ever. Do you agree. Here is the article if you'd like to read it.

If you've ever played golf, you know that it's not just a walk in the park. You have to do everything right, every swing. If you can't focus for about four hours, you're in trouble already. It's more mental than physical, but is still physical. To score under 70 consistently on the hardest courses in the world is a very large feat. Many people score in the 80s-100s while still not following the rules completely strictly like the professional tour does.

Saying that, I disagree that he is the best athlete in all of sports. While I'm sure he could play well in a lot of sports because of his athleticism and focus, there are other players with these and other important characteristics. For instance, a centre back in football (European) has to have tremendous focus, and be the fastest, most fit, and strongest players on the pitch. An example of this is current English football and Chelsea FC captain John Terry. He's always aware and is very fast and strong. If you saw the save he made off the goal line, you'll see an example of that. And he's obviously got really good leadership skills to go along with it. Now that's what I call a good all-around athlete!

I think it is unfair to name Tiger the best athlete ever. He may be the best golfer currently playing the game but each sport needs different skills. Just because Tiger is good at golf does not mean he is better than Wayne Gretzky, Pele, Jordan or many of the other great athletes current or past. Besides lets just wait and see if he will break all of Jack Nicklaus' records before naming him the best golfer ever.......

Absolutely not, to both questions. I do not believe that it is such an automatic to call Tiger the best golfer ever. Certainly there is no question that he is a phenomenal golfer, and one of the best of all time. I say this taking in to consideration a number of factors, technology, level of competition(there is no clear peer(s) for Tiger, whereas Jack contended with Gary Player, Tom Watson, and Arnold), eighteen second place finishes for Jack in majors, a clearly defined goal list for Tiger to pursue(hanging that #18 up on his wall as a child). I will say that Tiger's ability to focus and perform in the big ones is as good as any athlete in any sport, ever, however, the best athlete ever? A golfer, absolutely no way! Michael, The Great One, Sweetness, Lance, etc.
Cheers

He's hitting a small ball off a tee - all he has do is swing his arms and move his legs accordingly & keep his head down.

Calling Tiger the best athlete is like calling Chris Moneymaker a great athlete...

If Tiger can hit homeruns, kick a 40 yard field goal, take a few body checks only to score in 10 seconds, or run up and down a court and do reverse layups, or play on a clay court for 5 hours straight of constantly having to run, while swinging a racket at any given moment then I might consider him a good athlete...

Sorry - I have no respect for tiger - Athletes that do not appreciate their fans - should never be given the honor of being 1 of the "greats" in any sport...

If it wasn't for the fans most of these atheletes would be helping you take your groceries to your car..

It is quite obvious that Tiger is the best golfer, but definately not the best athlete. Look at the golfers and compare them to players in other sports. In golf, they come in all kinds of age, shape, and form. In other sports, they pretty well have to be young, and in very good shape and strength to compete with others at a professional level. Tiger just has to swing a golf club, and doesn't have to do any running,,jumping,or come into physical contact with his competitors. Compare that to what guys like Michael Jordan,Wayne Gretzky,Jerry Rice, and others have had to do in their sport. So,yes,Tiger is probably the best golfer, but definately not the best athlete.

BEST athlete ever?

NO.

Dave Winfield is the only man in history to be DRAFTED by a team in MLB, NFL, and the NBA.

Jackie Robinson lettered in 4 sports at UCLA.

How about Jim Thorpe?

Jesse Owens?

What about Carl Lewis?

Bruce Jenner perhaps?
Heck, I would take any olympic decathlete over Tiger.

He's a great golfer... and I hear he has a mean pick up basketball game... but he is by NO means the greatest athlete ever.

I think you could argue that he's the most dominating performer currently in any sport, but I'm not sure about being the best athlete. For "best athlete," I'd probably look at someone in a sport like track, or a guy who just does many things well.

Still hard to compare him to Nicklaus, in my opinion. He's ahead of him at this stage, but I'll feel more able to make that judgment in about ten years.

No doubt, though, Tiger is awesome. I was watching him yesterday and thinking, this guy makes shots that I thought you could only make in video games.

This is not a baseball question, but Tiger is one of the best golfers ever, as for best athlete ever, I'd say not even close, unless he can excell in other pro sports.

He is a great golfer (perhaps the best ever), but there are several pro athletes more athletically talented than him. Golf doesn't particularly require the athletic talent the way sports like basketball and track & field do.
