I can only afford to spend about 300 dollars the first month, more after that *once I get paid*. I'm leaving Detroit within the next month *hopefully* and have to somehow arrange housing amidst the chaos.

Yeep! Apartments within the city limit start around $1000/mo for a studio (in the not so great part of town). You would probably do better to try and find a small room in a house. Poke around washingtondc.craigslist.org in the shared and sublet sections too. I once got lucky and found a great deal on a sublet because the lessee was desperate! GOOD LUCK!

$300 won't get you a shoe box. The average rental rate in the D.C. metro area for a 1-bdr is roughly $1,000 give or take depending on location. Your best bet is to try and get shared accomodation and www.craigslist.com/d.c., should help you out.

Also, if you have a car and/or do not minding commuting, you might want to look outside D.C. proper in places like Northern VA or M.D. The average commute is about 1 and 1/2 hours both ways...this is standard for most pple living in the area.....

Look into Fairview in the northeast Arlington, Va area or somwhere along Interstate 66! Maryland realtors are too Greedy! Try a motel outside the "loop" for the first month.

Yep $2000 and up for 2 mattress room, yet section time jobs are exceedingly common to locate. in case you reside in Arlington, VA, Alexandria VA, Bethesda MD or Chevy Chase MD, all are close commute to DC and could run you approximately $10/day out and in of the city on Metro.

Try contacting a local real estate agent. They will know everything there is to know about cheap and safe options. A really good website to browse local real estate/real estate agents is: http://www.realestateforsaleindc.com

It's really easy to navigate and is full of info about realtors with links to their personal websites. Most of their websites will have all the available homes/rentals in the area along with community info, so you can do some research before you contact anyone. Hopefully that works for you. Good luck!
