The System Configuration utility automates the routine troubleshooting steps that Microsoft Product Support Services Support Professionals use when they diagnose system configuration issues. When you use this utility to modify the system configuration, you can select check boxes to eliminate issues that do not pertain to your configuration.

When you use the System Configuration utility, you can easily reset or change the configuration settings in Windows to include preferences for the following files and settings: • The System.ini file
• The Win.ini file
• The Boot.ini file
• Programs that are set to load during the startup process (these programs are specified in the Startup folder and in the registry)
• Environment settings
• International settings

To prevent any one of these items from loading when you restart the computer, use either of the following two methods: • Click the General tab, and then click Diagnostic Startup - load basic devices and services only. When you use this option, device drivers and software are loaded interactively when you restart the computer.

msconfig is not a debugging tool like command prompt. msconfig allows you to choose what applications and system files should open upon starting up your computer. this is handy when your computer takes forever to boot up. sometimes when you download or install a program it automatically starts up when your computer does. so some people have a lot of programs like that. also, sometimes the computer can have trouble starting all the way up because it is looking for an application to start that doesn't exist anymore. i wouldn't recommend messing too much with it unless you know what system files do what. you could end up selecting the wrong file to not start up and your computer will never start up.

I'm not an It professional, but I do know that msconfig is used to enable or disable certain things that run at startup. For example, you can throw Windows into a permanently Safe Mode state, or you can disable some startup programs.

msconfig is used to see what is loaded and what is in the various configuration files that windows uses.

its a system configuration tool...
I'm not sure if your using the word 'fix' as to troubleshoot..
but normally itz just configuration.
really depends on what you do...

for example the startup tab has all the programs that starts when your window starts.
Disabling some of the unneeded programs may start your windows faster..

so.. really depend what your trying to fix.
