The story is that Athena was given birth from Zeus' head, but I found one site that said:
"The Greek myth states Athena's true mother was Metis, a Titan, belonging to the pre-Olympian race of deities of the matriarchal period suppressed by the later patriarchy. She was swallowed by Zeus--a metaphor for the matriarchal suppression. "

Athena's mother is Metis, a titan who was the goddess of prudence. The myth goes that Zeus heard a prophecy that if Metis had a son, that son would overpower him so he tricked her into letting him swallow her. Metis ended up in his head and she knew she was having a girl and she pounded out a helmet and shield for baby Athena. Soon the headaches from the pounding got too much for Zeus, and Hephaestus split open his head to let out, lo and behold, a fully grown Athena with shield and helmet.
Hope it helps :)

Athena is the Greek goddess of the crafts and arts. She was the patron goddess of Athens. Athena later became the Greek god of wisdom.
Zeus was once married to Metis. It was prophesied that a son born to Metis would overthrow Zeus as he had overthrown Cronus. To prevent that from happening Zeus devoured Metis. Eventually Zeus began to have excruciating headaches. He summoned Hephaestus to assist. Hephaestus struck Zeus' forehead with an ax, and Athena emerged in full armor.
Metis is the mother....

Metis, Zeus' first wife, who's name means 'wisdom'.
She was a Titaness, and though Zeus loved her, he feared that the child (whom had been predicted to be a son) would overthrow him as he had overthrown his own father, Cronus/Kronos. So he tricked Metis into turning into a fly, and then swallowed her whole, and she stayed in his mind, providing Zeus with advice & wisdom for eternity. Their child was Athena.
