Hi there! I worked in the financial industry for over a decade and started out as a teller in one of the larger institutions (which has since been engulfed by another). I'm sure you can guess which one.

What they will be looking for is basic customer service skills to begin with. Any previous customer service and cash handling skills will be an asset, as well as being computer literate since everything is done and calculated by computers.

You need to be a pretty good judge of people because you will have those out there trying their level best to convince you to give them what is not rightfully theirs, or try to trick you or defraud the bank. You will need to do this while at the same time NOT be rude or condescending.

You will need to have excellent attention to detail to ensure you are following procedures for every transaction. You will need to study things like whether body and figures match on cheques, whether it has been properly signed and dated. You will need to check out suspicious currency (possibly counterfeit bills), checking i.d. properly to ensure you are giving the money to the proper customer!! Very important. You will need to do this while still being able to give quick and timely service and not get flustered.

Being a teller was a good job and I learned a LOT, which enabled me to go on with a fulfilling career with the bank until I was eventually downsized. These things happen. It can be challenging too, due to the many security issues involved, but it is nice when you can help someone solve a problem and when you get to know the "regulars" on a first name basis.

It's a good entry level job and a good start to a career in the financial industry.

Make sure to tell them you feel tellers should be extra helpful to customers.. You feel they will keep their business at that bank and not want to move their funds to another bank... Companies like to know you are protecting their assets by keeping the customers happy.

You probably don't want to hear about my experiences -- was robbed at gunpoint. Other than that - most - of my customers were great. Even ran into one of my old customers in Japan!
