Is rap music?

my friend was arguing with me that rap is not music, when i think it is. it's poetry set to a beat. what do you think?

Good rap is music...By "good" I mean any in which the rapper utilizes their brain while writing the lyrics...That being said, most rap wouldn't qualify...

As far as meeting the criteria of music...Rap (especially Hip Hop) has melody, harmony, rhythm, pitch, tempo etc...Whether or not people are pleased with the final product is up to them, but in the technical sense, yes...

I hate it when people argue that it's not...I view that as a sign of ignorance...

Frank Sinatra wasn't a Beatles fan...He didn't consider them to be making music and we all know how that turned out...

It's all close mindedness...

Not really, they basically just talk and use machines where you push buttons to make the "music". Unless it has been really thought out, and it has good, meaningful lyrics, then no, but if the artist actually took the time to write about something rather than sex, drugs, money, and other retarded crap like that, then I would say yes. So I guess it just depends on what rap song it is.

However, If you like it, then it doesn't really matter what anyone else thinks, and if they want to argue with you about it, then more power to them, but I don't think it will change your mind anyway, will it?

dont listen to your friend I love rap and I agree its poetry set to a beat people would be highly offended if people started attacking other genres so they need to shut up cause I can find something wrong with a music

I have many narrow minded friends that feel that rap is not music. i know what they are getting at, but where does that leave hardcore heavy metal, wailing on instuments to undecipherable vocals. Either way to each their own, I love mostly all that music has to offer and YES, rap is music. To say that any genre of music is "not music" is such an ignorant statement.

By that definition, rap is clearly music.
But from a deeper, personal level - I feel art must move you and cause a reaction within you to be valid. Rap clearly does this, it's one of the most divisive genres today. Just as "legit" musicians didn't want to accept jazz as an art form, many people refuse to acknowledge the artistry and musicianship of the best DJs and MCs today... but that doesn't take away its impact or its influence.
