Because it's not supposed to. New Years Day 2005 was a Saturday and Christmas 2005 was a Sunday. However, New Year's Day 2006 was a Sunday. Great trick question!

New Year's Day and Christmas Day must fall on the same day of the week, as they did in 2005/2006 (Sunday) or 2004/2005 (Saturday) and every other year.
Christmas and New Year's progress one day of the week each year. Since 2005/2006 was on Sunday, 2006/2007 will be on Monday. However, going backwards, 2004/2005 was on a Saturday, which should mean that 2003/2004 was on a Friday, but it wasn't. They were on Thursday. 2004 was a Leap Year and the extra day in February pushed the 2004/2005 Christmas and New Year's to Saturday instead of Friday.

Yeah, I agree, but to me, 2006 is even worse! Israel vs Lebanon, freezing(literally) winter, extremely hot summer, 6.6.06., a satanist song winning Eurovision song contest, I mean everything is bad this year!! And there are 4 more months to go!
