You may want to consider adding more RAM to your computer. RAM is random access memory, and it allows you to run more programs (multitask) than you normally could at a time. To find out what kind of RAM your computer needs, visit www.crucial.com

Below I've listed and reviewed some free software that help detect, remove and quarantine viruses and spy-ware.

AVG Antivirus - http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5
AVG is a free Antivirus program which features an automatic update system to keep you virus library up to date, and a scan scheduler to scan your PC in the dark hours while you're sleeping.

Sygate Personal Firewall - http://www.tucows.com/preview/213160
This program monitors all incoming and outgoing connections to your PC. You control which programs are allowed to connect. This program also warns you when another program changes, and prompts you to allow the program to continue running.

Spybot Search & Destroy - http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html
This program scans your computer for spyware left behind from browsing websites. Spyware usually comes from any site with a **** load of pop-ads. Anyhow, this program allows you to remove spyware from your computer.
Warning: Do not attempt to remove anything named Backweb or Backweb lite. It's not actually spyware!

Adaware SE Personal Edition - http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10045910.html?part=dl-ad-aware&subj=dl&tag=top5
This program is similar to Spybot S&D. I use both, but personally if I had to choose between the two, I'd choose Adaware. This program is free, though it does offer a premium version, and business edition.

Firefox - http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/
Seriously, if you download anything I've listed, this should be top priority. It's a web browser (much like internet explorer), except it features a built in pop-up blocker and is all around, a safer web browser than Internet Explorer. It also has a very cool bookmark system, and a ton of plugins from web developer tools to music toolbars. This program will significantly lower the amount of spyware and adware your computer will contact.

Well, that about wraps it up. Every program listed above, I use personally. Yes, the reviews were written by me, and contain my expressed opinion, and a lot of truth too ;)

Wow.....you got some looooooong answers.

You may try everything, but in my experience, orioncheung is not far from having the best answer.

Do you own your computer for some time already?
I suppose yes. So let me explain what can be your problem.

Your computer should be overheating. You need to keep some space behind to let the air flow out of the case: 5-7 inches is the minimum.

Then, open it. You'll probably find a lot of dust inside, in particular on the cooler, on the fan over the processor and the fan behind your computer (the one inside the power supply).

You can remove it using a vacuum with a brush, but be very gentle and careful while you're doing that. Unplug everything and keep one hand touching the case.

You may buy a dust blaster at office depot, officemax, stapples, etc... to blow the dust out of all the components, in particular the power supply.

last thing, verify the cooler is well placed over the processor. If it moved, your processor should overheat then your computer should freeze.

PS: don't use AVG antivirus. A recent test found it the worse of the antivirus. Prefer Avast, it's free and as efficient as the new commercial ones...

Good luck

You may be trying to run too many programs at once. Use cntrl, alt, and delete at the same time. This brings up task manager. Click on task manager and go to process. You should be using no more than 5-10% of your resources. There may be programs running in the backround that your not aware of. Eliminate those programs, and your computer should run better.
