Is it really worth it to file the seperation or should a divorce be filed instead?

You would file your separation agreement with the court to protect your interests while the divorce is pending. You are responsible for your spouse (as well as any DEBT they may incur). File that in the back of your head. It just protects your interests while the divorce is pending. It also makes the divorce smoother because everything is already in writing. The separation agreement kind of converts to the final divorce.

It depends on the state you live in as some do not have legal separation as an option.

However, going for the divorce is probably the way to go. You can get support and work out details once you have retained an attorney.

There must be a valid reason for it.
One can gain time for reconciliation rather than going directly to divorce.

get a lawyer, or go to the court house to get the paperwork, and hope you do it right.
