I am a 49yr old female. I am widowed. On Aug 17, 2006, I was diagnosed with Severe Degenerative Arthritis in my low back. I went and signed up for Disability today but I think that will be a problem. I work at Dollar General about 20hours a week so I have some income plus I get a widows pension from the VA. I came home, called a lawyer and all they could tell me is you have to be out of work for a year to get Social Security Disability. If I do not work, I cannot pay bills! At Dollar General I am a cashier and my back starts hurting and the pain generates down my leg. If I do not have that income I cannot meet my bills and if they find out about me applying for disability they would fire me. One qualification for the job is to be able to lift 40lbs. I can't lift that! I was never told this when hired and it is not in writing anywhere.

What can I do? Please help someone!
Thanks,
Karen

Social Security denies everyone the first time. You will probably go through two appeals before you get it. It could take a year. You need a Doctor familiar with the process that is on your side. There are lawyers that help people get Social Security, but they are not cheap. It will help you to read and understand all the laws and regulations that relate to your case. Keep all your documents together and organized. Eventually you will get it.

you need to speak to someone who knows the ins and outs of disability beaurocracy - a standard lawyer has no idea (though, in this case, it can, easily, take a year or more). part time work shouldn't put you out of the running (though it doesn't help), but, again, it's a long, tortuous (and torturous) process, and most people only receive it after an initial denial and appeal (and this is in california, where the gettin's good!). i can only suggest you start the process by finding someone who knows what they're talking about (another person, on disability, in your state), and see what they did. good luck!

I feel your pain -- literally. I was diagnose degenerative disc disease. I was told the same thing. I'm a 40-something woman who occasionally moves like a 70 year old woman. I'm still unable to get a handicap placard for my car because I have more functional days than barely functional days. These days I work like a demon when I can and medicate when it's tough. I'll be watching your answers.

Good Luck to us all!

Individuals are able to work when on disability, but their payments will be reduced,in other words you will not get full benefits. They will take into consideration any assets you have, vehicle, home, money in bank, widows pension. In my state you cannot have assets of more than 2,000.00 to qualify for disability. The sad truth is that in considering your widows pension you probably won't qualify. You are in the category of make to much to qualify for anything don't make enough to survive. IE WORKING POOR

to get disablility you are going to have to fight them all the way you will definatly need a lawyer and a doctors help I have been fighting but without the help of a lawyer when even the doctors say i cant do the work i used to do. They will deny you every time you file until you take it in front of a judge so just keep appealing

I'm sorry. Why don't You go to free legal advice? they should be able to help You out with this.I have heard it was very difficult to prove disability, but Not this difficult. I have heel spurs and supposed to have operated on or stretched, which both takes weeks of recuperation. I don't know how this is going to work for Me then either.

I just read a great bill on how to save money in healthcare called "Healthcare for Less," by Michelle Katz. Some things she mentions are checking into your local government programs (the programs, websites and phone numbers are mentioned in the book). One is Medicare....call 1-800-Medicare...you might be eligible! I ordered the book from my local Barnes and Noble, but it might be able for you to order it from www.amazon.com.....you can also order it from her website at www.healthcareforless.us.
