Hi,

Is it better to use subdomains for SEO purposes? For example, if I have 4 smaller companies part of a larger organization, would it be better if I do this:

company1.mydomain.com
company2.mydomain.com
company3.mydomain.com
company4.mydomain.com

Would that be the best way to optimize?

It is better to have one. I wrote about this and can be found on my site. A subdomains are seen as a new site. Which means you will have to build backlinks and wait to be indexed and hope not to hit the sandbox. It is better to keep everything on one URL if possible.

If they are totally different, let's say one company sold cars and the other one sold clothing....it would be better to create a separate site. But, if one sold jackets and the other sweaters.. keep them on one. Make sense?

Mr. SEO has it right - in most cases you just want to use one domain.
