the absolute value of the number five.

The two vertical lines indicate the 'absolute value' of an expression.

The absolute value is simply the positive value of an expression.

So l 5 l = 5. l 121 l = 121 no change for positive numbers.

l -5 l = 5 , l -121 l = 121 .. negative numbers simply become positive values. It is THAT simple.

I assume you're referring to Bacardi 151. "151" is the proof of the spirit, which is the percentage of alcohol by volume, multiplied by two. Therefore, the percentage of alcohol in "151" would be 75.5%. By contrast, most rum is 35%, and whiskey is 40%, or 70 and 80 proof respectively.

Or yeah, after reading the other responses, I wasn't even thinking of a math question. I think they explained it well. Shows where my mind goes, even in the early afternoon.

The absolute value of 5 is noted as 'l5l'.

It is also called modulus 5.

The positive value of the number in between the signs of the absolute value will be taken. No negative values will be considered.

That is what it is in simplest terms.

Absolute value.

Means the value of the number regardless of sign.

I -5 I = 5
I 5 I = 5

Because whether it's positive or negative, there's still '5' of it.

Used often with square roots, or any even rooted number (root is another more common name for a number raised to a fractioned power).

Absolute value, meaning the distance from zero of whatever is contained within that sign.
So |5| = 5 and |-5| = 5
|-200| = 200
