Trees are nice...if you don't have any, you might consider putting one or two on your property...place them far enough away from the house that their growth wont be a problem, but close enough that when mature, they provide some shade to the home... this adds curb appeal, and will help lower utility costs for cooling, in the summer. Also be careful not to place them too close to a utility line. You might consider decorative trees, or fruit trees... if you use fruit trees, keep in mind you need to use them in pairs, to insure proper cross-pollination...or you wont get any fruit off of them.
If you already have trees, then you may consider doing some landscaping around them... flowers, etc.
Flower beds arranged strategically make a nice addition to your property too. I like to use the "weed paper" under any planting beds to help control weeds.
Some other choices in decoration would be fountains, rock 'scapes', lawn ornaments, etc.
I would recommend that you start looking at some of the home/gardening magazines for ideas.
Good brand names, are Scott's, Miracle Grow, and for weed/grass killing, Round Up. I use Scott's fertilizers, on my lawn/garden, Miracle Grow on my raised veggie gardens, and Roundup, to keep the grass and weeds from growing where I dont want them... like in the driveway, or around difficult to mow areas, like propane tanks, poles, building perimeters, etc. Its good for killing poison ivy and plants of that nature too. Now... Round Up kills everything... so, if only need to kill weeds... then go with Scott's products... like Weed N Feed for your lawn. It will kill the dandelions, etc, while feeding your lawn.
Have Fun!

Did you just buy this? If so you need to see what is there and when it blooms. I recommend waiting an entire year to see what pops up and surprises you.
A note about weed killers:If you apply them helter skelter throughout the yard you are not going to be able to grow stuff where you pour it w/o waiting...afterall a weed is a plant that is just growing where you do not want it to grow. The weed killer does not know the difference and most are not good for children or pets...
Basically the best ploy is to pick a spot and start there. Pull the weeds by hand. If you have 6 or more hours of DIRECT sunlight on a spot that is Full sun. Go to any nursery and they will have plants labeled by where they will grow..as well as personnel who can guide you. There are lots of sites and shows about this process...remember start small and do not plant more than you can care for and water or you are wasting your time and money. The Fall is the best time to buy and plant shrubs, trees, and perennials because they are on sale and it is cooler which is what these plants prefer..This takes years if you do it yourself but it is worth it.
BTW: If you decide to have someone do this for you. Look at yards you like and ask the people who did their landscaping(people like to brag)...this is a reallllly good idea for larger trees and shrubs plus they may come with a guarantee for up to three years IF they are professionally planted.
