burnt coins rejected?

My bank refused to take my burnt coins out of circulation due to the counting machine they use. Has anyone ever encountered this?

The US mint will take coins back that are defaced. I guess I thought that banks, as part of the Fed, were required to take them back. If you live anywhere near a US mint branch I know they will take them back.
